Through various programs and events, and with the support of faculty, staff, and alumni, the Newbury Center creates a community of belonging and the ability for first-generation students to thrive.  These graduate assistantships provide the unique opportunity to be part of the team that has been building a student center from the ground up putting theory to practice, especially as it relates to first-generation students and implementing best practices for student success.

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in the development, planning, and implementation of professional or personal development events and social community-building activities 
  • Develop and manage various mentoring and networking opportunities for students
  • Assist and manage various special projects such as maintaining the database of the Terrier F1RSTS Faculty & Staff Advocates and the tracking of attendees at events, MailChimp tagging, writing donor thank you notes, reconciling expenses monthly, etc. 
  • Assist with the Newbury Center’s responsibilities and work in conjunction with https://bu.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u%3D67e7ca82a6c28d990269ed477%26id%3Da7038f7153%26e%3Dfe5490b66c&source=gmail&ust=1777042728160000&usg=AOvVaw3RUO1FfBocFrdu4-njMFx X">FirstGen Forward, a national non-profit focused on first-generation student success
  • Represent the Newbury Center at special events, e.g., recruitment and admissions events, orientation, and parent and family programs
  • Serving as ambassadors and liaisons of the Newbury Center during events helping with setup, check-ins, and assisting event partners and participants 
  • Informal supervision of the undergraduate student staff, as needed
  • Work collaboratively with the Newbury Center professional staff and student staff, as well as numerous campus constituencies. 
  • Other duties as assigned

    Specialized Positions: In addition to generally supporting the Center, the Communications Graduate Assistant and the Counseling Graduate Assistant have specific primary projects and responsibilities, noted in each job description.  Please pay particular attention to the role that you are applying to.

    Time Commitment: 15-20 hours per week, including some nights and weekends.  Please note: These positions are a nine-month commitment starting mid-August 2026 and ending mid-May 2027.  Start date is negotiable. 

Compensation: $19 per hour for 20 hours per week for 9 months starting in mid-August 2026.  Flexibility to begin Summer 2026.

Location:  755 Commonwealth Avenue, Suite B04 

Accessible via the T: Take the Green Line to the Boston University Central stop.


Other Things to Note:  

  • It is expected that a Graduate Assistant’s first professional priority is their responsibility to the Newbury Center. Outside commitments may not interfere with any of the aforementioned responsibilities and communicated dates below.  
  • Newbury Center Graduate Assistants may not have a second job on campus, for example, Teaching Assistant positions, Research Assistant positions, Resident Assistant positions, lab assistant, internships, etc. 
  • Newbury Center Graduate Assistants must be available to work 15-20 hours per week 
  • Newbury Center Graduate Assistants must be able to lift 25 pounds and stand for long periods of time

Graduate Assistants must be available for the following commitments: 

  • 5 hours of self-paced training over the summer 
  • Early Move-In (Sunday, August 23rd)* 
  • Fall Staff Retreat (Monday, August 24th & Tuesday, August 25th)* 
  • First-Gen Orientation programming (Wednesday, August 26th--Tuesday, September 1st)* 
  • Weekly staff meetings (1 hour—can attend in-person or virtually) 
  • Be available the entire 2026-2027 Academic Year (Not studying abroad or graduating after one semester)

Graduate Assistants with off-campus housing that starts on September 1, 2026 will need to discuss their start date with the Newbury Center staff prior to the acceptance of an offer of employment.
